A Sight for Sore Eyes!

Well my eyes were rather bleary on Saturday morning, getting up at the crack of dawn to open the clinic up for staff to come in and man the phones. The reason for this?

Well, Focus Clinics had a big feature in The Times Body & Soul section on Saturday written by Celia Dodd about Paul Ross’s treatment which I performed earlier this year.

Our phones have been red hot and it seems that most of you like using the internet which is great news, so we are getting emails through as a result of the article requesting consultations, so its great news and fantastic for the new clinic.

We are booking up quickly and people our loving our new WaveLight Alegretto laser and the results, it seems that everyone wants new eyes for Christmas! Well better eyesight that is.

For those of you who are historian buffs here are some interesting facts about Wimpole Street.

Part of Wimpole Street's Unique History

Today there are over 3,000 people employed in the Wimpole Street and Harley Street area and the private clinics are modern, comfortable and welcoming; a far cry from the original days when Harley Street doctors arranged their own appointments and dealt with correspondence by letter in candle light and resided in the house itself.

Medical History Dating From the 1860s

It was during the 1860s that doctors began moving into Harley Street and Wimpole Street choosing the area because of the quality housing, the central location as well as the accessibility to major train stations such as Kings Cross St Pancreas and Marylebone. As more and more doctors moved to the area they invited colleagues to work with them from their prestigious homes and the area began to thrive as a medical centre.

Royal Society of Medicine, Wimpole Street

This trend was given extra impetus when the Medical Society of London moved to Chandos Street in 1872 and the Royal Society of Medicine to Wimpole Street in 1912. Since then the numbers of doctors, hospitals and medical organisations in and around Harley Street has spiraled - from a total of about 20 in 1860 the number of doctors grew to 80 by 1900 and to almost 200 by 1914. By the time the National Health Service was established there were 1500 and contrary to expectation this figure has never fallen, in recent years actually increasing if dentists are included!

English Heritage celebrates great figures of the past and the buildings they inhabited with Blue plaques.

Evelyn Baring, 1st Earl of Cromer (1841-1917), Colonial Administrator, lived and died here.

57 Wimpole Street, W1

Paul McCartney lived at The Asher's House between 1964 and 1966. His room was on the top floor, overlooking Browning Mews. Peter Asher's room was next door, overlooking Wimpole Street. Dr Asher's surgery was on the ground floor. The music room where McCartney worked on his songs, both alone and with John Lennon, was in the basement.

Poet and essayist Elizabeth Barrett Browning lived at number 50.

We have just opened our new clinic!

We have been working all weekend to get it ready and it is now open.

The team have worked their socks off to get it up and running so a big thanks to them (Amy, Reena, Jo, Kelley, Justin and Kat)!

We are just around the corner from our old offices in Harley Street, in Wimpole Street.

The clinic is truly state-of-the-art, with 3,000 square feet, set across three of the large and stylish houses. In stark contrast to the original 1900's properties in the area, it is bright, modern and welcoming with vivid blue LED lights smouldering from the staircase, 50 inch plasma screens, water features and specially commissioned art installations!

We have a large and welcoming reception area, advanced audio-visual presentation facilities, as well as four consulting rooms, and a chill out room for patients to relax after their treatment.

We have just signed up to be at the Fabulous at 50 show in Bournemouth, which takes place on Friday and Saturday the 7th and 8th of September.

It’s for the over 50s and has an exciting mix of exhibition, seminars, demonstrations and “have a go” classes.

The event is being held at the Bournemouth International Convention Centre, in the brand new Solent Hall overlooking the ocean. It should be a great day out, there is something to suit every taste, interest and budget.

an incredible week

Since I was on This Morning with Paul the phones literally haven't stopped ringing and we are receiving hundreds of emails requesting information. Also we are booking lots of consultations so I am rushed off my feet!

Its great but does mean that we are working around the clock to get back to everybody, so if you have responded, please bear with us we will get back to you. You can also call us in the office on 0845 5000 500 if that's easier.

It looks like I'm going to be very busy. No point in thinking about holidays for a while. I treat all the patients at FOCUS Laser Vision myself!

I haven't really got time to be writing this blog! I should be treating my new patients from This Morning.

My Morning on This Morning!

I had a great time this morning. It was very different from my usual day in Harley Street. I was picked up at 9.15 and whisked off to ITV's This Morning’s studios in Waterloo, which overlook the Thames.

Presenters Phillip Schofield and Fern Britton were walking down the hall when I arrived and said “Ah you must be Dr Allamby!” they were really friendly.

I was taken to the “Green Room’ which was a very cosy affair. People were buzzing around making toast and tea and there were big plates of croissants and fruit. Jeremy Kyle was playing loudly on the TV as he is also based at the ITV studios.

All the other guests were there including Paul Ross! I recognised the singer Tony Christie and Liam from Coronation Street.

Paul and I had to go and get our ‘make up’ done together! No lipstick just a bit of powder for the shine you'll be glad to hear!

When I had to go into the studio Phil and Fern were in a fit of giggles from something. Phil had to run out into the hallway to calm down, we could hear him screaming with laughter.

Paul and I were on for around 10 minutes chatting to Phil and Fern. They showed footage of Paul having his treatment and asked me questions about it.

Phillip was very interested as he wears contact lenses, I hope I managed to persuade him to come in and have his eyes done!

My phone didn’t stop ringing afterwards as so many friends and family had seen the piece. Nor did the office phones stop ringing. It seems that there are a lot of This Morning viewers who need help with their vision!

paul ross at focus laser vision

Excitement in the office today as we had another celebrity in for treatment!

I have just treated TV and Radio presenter Paul Ross’s, he is very funny and bright and he is the brother of Jonathan Ross.

He has some of the thickest corneas I have seen and is a perfect candidate for treatment.

He was even joking about it on his drive time radio show on LBC, being a ‘hard’ man with extra thick corneas!

He was an exceptional patient, cracking jokes and smiling.

He had quiet an entourage, This Morning were there filming the treatment and so was his lovely daughter Dolly.

Once the treatment had finished, he jumped up and punched his fist in the air and shouted ‘YESS’. It was quite a moment, and made me jump!

He was delighted and overwhelmed that he could read straight away without his glasses. It has worked out so well that This Morning have invited me onto the show on Tuesday the 9th of July, to chat to Phil and Fearn about it on the couch with Paul.

I can’t wait to meet Phil and Fearn and maybe I can persuade them to have the treatment too!

A busy month

Well it has been a busy month, our new offices in Wimpole Street are finally finished and we should be moving in the next few months, there is just some paperwork to sort out.

It is very modern and swish in comparison to our more traditional offices in Harley Street. It is huge and I think our patients will love it.
