This stiffening of the eye’s internal lens means you have a reduced ability to bring near images into focus. When people start to develop presbyopia, they find they need to hold books, magazines, newspapers and other reading materials at arm’s length in order to focus properly and even computer work can become increasingly difficult. When they perform near work, they may also develop headaches, eye strain or feel fatigued.

Traditional cures are wearing reading glasses, bifocal or varifocal glasses or monovision contact lenses, all of which have their limitations either in inconvenience, effect or tolerability.

However these are fortunately no longer the only options. Mr David Allamby, an ophthalmic surgeon at London’s prestigious Focus Clinic, is the pioneer in presbyopic treatments in the UK and a recognised leader of the field of presbyopia. After performing the very first treatment of its kind in the UK, he has paved the way for a more sophisticated treatment called Blended Vision.

Blended Vision is a 10-minute laser eye treatment which allows you to see both far and near without needing glasses or contact lenses. One eye is corrected fully for distance vision and the other eye is corrected for near vision, and both eyes then work together merging, or ‘blending’, the images from each eye within the brain to allow good vision for near and far and giving a greater depth of field. It is an advancement from monovision and a much more refined treatment.

Blended Vision is suitable for more than 90% of people who need reading glasses, and is much more effective than the related contact lens monovision which only 40-50% of people can tolerate. Screening tests at your consultation can easily confirm if you are suitable for Blended Vision.

The key advantages are:

· Freedom from reading glasses, distance glasses and contact lenses.

· Increased depth of field.

· It is tolerated by more than 90% of people, compared to just 40-50% with monovision.

· A long duration of benefit, and can be enhanced to keep up with any age-related progression of presbyopia.

The word presbyopia comes from the Greek word presbys, meaning “old man” or “elder”, and the ancient Greek word ops, meaning “eye”, but this “old man eye” and the unavoidable deterioration of the eye with age can be overcome with the help of Mr Allamby and the Focus Clinic team.

Amblyopia occurs when the nerves that connect one of the eyes to the brain develop incorrectly as a child. As a result, blurry or wrong images are sent to the brain, which causes the brain to ignore these signals, favouring the other eye. Patients then tend to use the stronger eye more and more, suppressing and weakening one eye also causing problems with depth perception.

Traditionally Lazy Eye is treated during childhood with patching techniques, covering the strong eye in order to make the weaker, suppressed eye work harder. Researchers have now found a new therapeutic approach that can also help adults. By using Tetris patients take part in dichoptic training (both eyes working together), using a specialised headset where one eye focuses on the falling shapes, and the other on the ground plane objects. After just two weeks, patients showed a dramatic improvement in the vision in the weaker eye and depth perception was also improved. A similar group who played using the traditional patching method only saw a moderate improvement.

When the weaker eye has to work harder it is as if the brain becomes more aware of the lazy eye, dormant cells reawaken, become activated and regenerated. Not only does your vision improve, but you get to have much more fun helping it!

Having worn contact lenses for over 20 years, Lasik is something that I had been thinking about for a long time, but never quite had the courage to do.

The team at Focus are brilliant. They go through very clearly and thoroughly about the whole process, and how you feel after the operation, making you feel at ease. The operation takes less than 10 minutes…. I remember looking at a very blury Mr Allamby before he started the procedure and then looking up at him, once the Lasik had been done and I could see him (fairly) clearly. A modern miracle, performed in less than 10 minutes!!!!! I can’t describe the grin I had on my face while being taken home and seeing London’s monuments with my own eyes, no contact lenses needed! It may sound silly, but it was the most liberating feeling I had had, for a long time.

I would, and have, recommended The Focus Clinic to anyone that will listen to me raving on about ‘amazement’ that I experienced with them, and how it has changed my life. It’s such an fantastic feeling, being able to see first thing in the morning without having to reach out for your glasses or having to put my contact lenses in. It may sound like a cliche, but I only have one complaint – I wish I did it a lot sooner!

The thought of having laser eye surgery was extremely daunting, but I can honestly say that from the moment I walked into the clinic, I knew I was in the best place. Every single member of staff I dealt with was friendly, informative, helpful, and caring. Dr Allamby and his team were absolutely fantastic. The procedure didn’t take very long and Dr Allamby talked me through every single step. I felt no pain whatsoever. The after-care service and support is second-to-none.

I am happy to report that I now have better than 20/20 vision and no need for glasses anymore. Had I known it would be this easy, I would have had this surgery a long time ago. I simply cannot recommend Focus Laser vision highly enough, they are absolutely outstanding in every way

Ab-so-lute-ly incredible. I can’t stop grinning.

It’s the morning after and literally no more than 18 hours ago, I was nervously lying down on a clinical bed being told to stare directly at a green flashing light. Now, for the first time in 15 years, I’m looking freely out of the window, tracing the tops of houses in the distant horizon and typing without the need for glasses or contact lenses. For me it feels unreal and I can only describe this 10 minute procedure as bordering miraculous.

It’s amazing to think that yesterday, I was short-sighted by around -3.75 in both eyes and suffering from astigmatism. I felt embarrassed and disappointed by my inability to define even the largest full-sized letter E without assistance. Today, on the other hand, in the very same examination room, I somehow managed to surprise myself by being able to reel off the tiniest letters on the bottom of the chart entirely unaided and with my own two eyes. That aside, I was thrilled to learn that my eyes were not only corrected and recovering well but I had attained near 20/12 vision… overnight. Almost twice better than the average 20/20? Gobsmacked is an understatement!

Like most, I’ve been considering having laser surgery for a while and researched thoroughly into several companies. Having had consultations with most major clinics, I can report that all were highly professional and welcoming – but it was Focus Clinic who stood out as a clear cut above the rest. From the outset, I sensed my eyes would be under the safest supervision and best care possible. Perhaps it was the fact that every staff member here – from reception to treatment room, assistants, technicians, the lovely Emma from patient-care to the formidable surgeon David Allamby – all without exception appeared dedicated to offering the maximum information along with uncompromising attention. Or perhaps it was the unfailing smiles, the extremely thorough examination and re-examination or the proud confidence of having the best laser equipment in the country with an outstanding 100% track record to match? Whatever it was, you won me over and I can truly say that my expectations have been surpassed beyond what I thought was possible! Thank you so so much.

For the first time, I can now understand why the same cliched responses appear again and again from your patients. Yes, the procedure really is that fast. Yes, you really do get the results (if you comply strictly to the aftercare programme). Yes, I really do wish I had done it sooner. And yes, if anyone happened to be considering it, I would urge them to go ahead and do it – and to look nowhere else but you. I cannot recommend you highly enough.

I have worn glasses or contact lenses for 26 years and finally had the opportunity, financially, to look into having laser treatment. I was recommended Focus by 2 separate friends and particularly Dr Allenby. From my first contact with Emma on the phone everyone at the clinic has been friendly, helpful and very reassuring. The clinic carried out various tests on my first visit and were able to give me a number of options. I was sent away with a set of contact lenses to simulate what my vision could be like. This help tremendously with the decision making process of what treatment I would undergo.

On the day I was obviously very nervous and once again the staff were fantastic at reassuring me and helped put me at ease. The actual treatment was very quick and Dr Allenby and his team talked me through each step – even giving me stress balls! Immediately after the treatment I could see more clearly. I am at day 2 and everything is exactly as they had described.

Looking out of my bedroom window this morning was a joy as I could see clearly! Which was as exciting as I had hoped it would be. Thank you everyone.

After years of glasses and contact lenses, I decided a change was in order…but I needed a push towards the laser eye surgery route. Speaking to a friend, she mentioned that she had had the surgery and would thoroughly recommend the place she had it done. After thinking it over some more, I asked her for the details and there began my introduction to the world of Focus Clinics.

From the moment I set foot in their clinic I never felt anything other than comfortable. All my questions were answered in an easy to understand fashion (making me feel less stupid!) and on the day of the surgery you would never have thought I was going to come out with 20:20 vision because it was all just so normal and everyday!
