Laser eye treatment is designed to change the shape of the cornea, a clear window at the front of the eye. By changing the shape and the power of the cornea, light can be brought to a correct focus onto the retina at the back of the eye.

To correct short sight, the cornea needs to be flatter and less powerful.  In this case the laser energy is mainly applied around the centre of the cornea and feathered off towards the periphery.

To correct far sight, the cornea needs to be more curved and focusing light more powerfully. Laser energy is mainly applied in the periphery of the cornea, with the central area being made steeper.
