FOCUS LASER VISION RESOURCE CENTRE

WaveLight Allegretto Laser – Custom LASIK and LASEK

FOCUS Laser Vision uses the newest technology in custom LASIK and LASEK, the WaveLight Allegretto laser and diagnostic scanners, revolutionary tools in customised laser vision correction.
With custom corrections, the majority of patients will have better than 20/20 vision.
At FOCUS Laser Vision, unlike other clinics, all of our treatments are customised in some way, as you deserve the very best vision possible.

What is customised laser eye treatment?
You can think of standard laser correction like a suit or dress you might buy off the peg. Customised treatment, however, is fully made to measure, precisely matched to your individual eyes in a way that a standard treatment cannot match. Additionally, we use customisation to change and improve the optical properties of your vision, to that we can build in reading power as well as distance sight.
Standard laser vision treatments will give an extremely good result. Customised treatments can go even better.

Customisation options with the WaveLight Allegretto
The WaveLight customisation includes four options, bringing together the very best diagnostic devices and laser systems with advanced know-how in how to use the scan data to optimize the your laser eye correction:

1) Wavefront Optimized Treatment
The treatment, unlike other lasers, is matched to the natural curved shape of the cornea, and compensates for the way in which laser light touches the surface during surgery.

This means a better quality of vision through having a more natural optical shape to the front of the eye after laser correction. Other lasers do not do this routinely leading to poorer vision, especially in low light conditions, e.g. night driving.

2) Wavefront Guided Treatment
We use the advanced Tscherning Wavefront Scanner to assess and measure imperfections in your eyes, above and beyond simple short sight or long sight. We can then use this information and input it into the laser to customise your laser eye treatment.
The wavefront scanner produces a 3D map of various imperfections or ‘aberrations’ in your vision, based upon the way that light enters and exits from the eye. Light enters all at the same time, like a flat wall, or ‘wave’ of rays but leaves in a curvy wave:

The scanner measures this curvy wave to make what we call a ‘wavefront map’. The perfect eye would have a ‘flat’ wavefront map, whereas an imperfect eye has a wavy map:

Everybody’s eyes have some imperfections and a wavefront map that is not flat. We can improve your vision by using the opportunity of getting rid of your glasses to also get rid of these other imperfections, and so ‘flatten’ the map.
We call this a ‘wavefront guided custom treatment’. It also includes the benefits of the wavefront optimised treatment from 1) above.

3) Topography (shape) Guided Treatment
A shape-guided treatment using the innovative Pentacam scanner allows us to treat imperfections in the shape of the cornea (the clear window at the front of the eye). As the cornea is the main focusing lens of the eye, any deviations from a uniform smooth curved surface will lead to a drop in the quality of vision.
We use the Pentacam corneal scanner to provide information that most other laser clinics are unable to access. The Pentacam uses sophisticated photography to build a 3D image of the front of the eye:

This information can be used to guide the laser eye treatment to correct any deviations from a perfect dome shape, as part of your refractive glasses correction.
We can also use this technique to correct scarred or damaged corneas e.g. from previous injuries or surgery or small zone treatments with older lasers (often leading to night vision problems). This will minimize or eliminate irregularities in the curved surface and hence restore an optimised shape.
We can also use this shape information to improve on the optics of the cornea, for example, in reading vision correction (see below).
4) Reading Vision Customisation
We can use the advanced Pentacam scanner information, above, to work out the optical properties and strength of your cornea, and then calculate how to reshape the surface to build in reading power into your vision.
