Lasek Laser Procedures

LASEK laser vision correction

LASEK is the state-of-the-art form of surface laser eye treatment. The final outcome is no different from LASIK, although LASEK will take longer to get the best result.

LASEK is an abbreviation for Laser Sub-Epithelial Keratomileusis and is suitable for many prescriptions. You will find surgeons around the world offering LASEK advanced surface laser correction.

If you are interested in the no-blade LASEK advanced surface laser technique, call us now on 0845 5000 500.

This procedure takes some of the benefit of the desirable features of LASIK. A dilute solution of alcohol is applied to loosen and remove only the very surface skin cells of the cornea (known as the epithelium).

LASEK can be used for patients who have thin corneas, and will leave the cornea stronger when compared to LASIK.

Once the epithelial layer has been removed, an excimer laser is then used to reshape the cornea, as in LASIK. Upon completion of the excimer laser treatment, the epithelial skin cell layer is then returned to its original position.

LASEK has the relative advantage in that it avoids potential LASIK complications encountered while making a flap (these are all rare) and during the flap healing process.

The relative disadvantage is that vision recovery is slower than LASIK and there is occasionally moderate, but temporary, discomfort for a few days after the procedure. Generally, a thin soft bandage contact lens will be worn for several days after treatment to help with healing and minimize discomfort.

Good functional vision is usually achieved within 3-5 days after treatment, although you will certainly be able to see even during the first few days.
