David Gandy is one of the most famous models in the world, and renowned for his blue eyes.
In June 2014, David Gandy had his Z-LASIK procedure with our medical director and chief surgeon David Allamby. The treatment is an advanced form of LASIK, using two lasers to complete the vision correction and incorporates wavefront optics to further enhance the outcome.
David’s LASIK Procedure
Understanding the importance of his eyes for his work, he knew that he had to entrust them to the right people. You can imagine that a few female hearts in Wimpole Street were set aflutter when David booked in to visit us at Focus to see whether we could help improve his vision !
Long shoots, worldwide travel and harsh environments – he recently shot a music video with Jennifer Lopez in the Mojave desert during a sandstorm – meant that contact lenses were becoming too difficult to wear and glasses in the modelling industry are simply not an option.
David is delighted with the result of his treatment. Just 30 minutes after surgery, he could read the small 20/20 letters on the test chart. By the following morning he could see 20/10, twice as sharp as 20/20 vision. It is a misconception that 20/20 is the best possible vision. The human eye can see in greater detail if the optics of the eye are good. With superb optics the eye can achieve 20/10, as was the case with David.
One of the reasons David chose Dr.Allamby as his surgeon is that our medical director has a 100% success rate for 20/20 vision for all common short-sighted prescriptions, including David’s. Dr.Allamby had also treated many celebrities, including some who are David Gandy’s personal friends.
The procedure took just 10 minutes for both eyes and was performed under local anaesthesia using numbing drops. As a patient, David was very cool and calm, taking it all in his stride; he sat down afterwards with a cup of coffee, chatted with the team and 30 minutes later – after an eye check with Dr.Allamby confirmed he had 20/20 vision already – went off home.
About David Gandy
David Gandy is one of the most famous male models of all time. He came from humble beginnings in a working class family from Essex, and then his friend secretly entered him into a televised modelling competition. He won the first prize.
In 2006, he became the face of Dolce & Gabbana, annually starring in their apparel campaigns and fashion shows. He is perhaps best known for the 2007 advert of Dolce & Gabbana’s fragrance “Light Blue” with Marija Vujovic. It gathered 11 million online hits and led to a 50-foot Times Square billboard! David has shot countless magazine covers, writes for Vogue and GQ magazine and still fits in the time to be the celebrity ambassador for Battersea Dogs and Cats Home. He rose to fame in the midst of a fad for skinny, androgynous male models, but transformed the trend with his muscular frame and more masculine ideal of male beauty.
'I couldn’t recommend surgery or David Allamby and the Focus team enough. They truly are a wonderful attentive team, everything is explained and the service and care was amazing'
In common with over 10 million Britons, David suffered from myopia, the medical term for short-sight, together with some mild astigmatism. It typically begins between ages of 6-18 and progresses often until the 20s. Once stable, most people are eligible for surgery. A comprehensive screening process is necessary to exclude patients who may be at higher risk.
As with David Gandy, Mr. Allamby takes a very risk-averse approach and this has been rewarded with a 100% success rate for 20/20 vision for all typical short-sighted prescriptions.
After having LASIK advanced eye surgery at Focus, a technique pioneered in the UK by our founder and medical director Mr. David Allamby, David Gandy no longer needs glasses for anything; his vision is 20/10 which is at the limit of capability for the human eye (there aren’t enough ‘pixels’ in the retina to see in finer detail).
